MDS Proteomics Named to the Red Herring 100

TORONTO, May 13 -- MDS Proteomics Inc., an emerging leader in drug discovery through systems biology, announced today its inclusion in the Red Herring 100 as selected by the editors of Red Herring, the premier magazine of business technology and innovation. The Red Herring 100 recognizes the top 50 public and the top 50 private companies whose services, business models, products and quality of management define business innovation. It previews the leaders of tomorrow in a number of key technology-related sectors, including software, biotechnology, wireless, communications services, media, hardware, nanotechnology, consumer electronics and energy. MDS Proteomics was cited as one of the top 50 private companies.

"We are honored to be chosen by the Red Herring editors, who select the 100 companies that are fundamentally changing the business landscape and are most likely to change the world," said Frank Gleeson, President and Chief Executive Officer of MDS Proteomics. "Our goal is to understand disease and take the guesswork out of medicine. We are revolutionizing drug discovery by targeting disease-causing proteins and developing precise, customized medicines that will ensure healthier lives."

In its sixth year, the Red Herring 100 has become the most respected list of its kind. Red Herring editors compile the list by using the same combination of subjective insights and hard metrics favoured by venture capitalists and investment bankers. These factors predict a company's ability to disrupt existing markets or create entirely new ones.

The Red Herring 100 is featured in the June 2002 issue of Red Herring magazine and is also available on http://www.redherring.com. It includes a short profile of MDS Proteomics. MDS Proteomics is a systems biology company focused on drug discovery and is forming strategic alliances with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. It is the only company of its kind that offers an integrated platform of superior science and ultra-sensitive technologies -- protein interaction mapping, differential analysis, phospho-profiling and chemical proteomics -- that can be applied across the entire spectrum of drug discovery and development, from identifying drug targets through product launch. This unified approach optimizes success in drug discovery and development while significantly reducing time, costs and risks.

MDS Proteomics' dynamic combination of world-class experts and sophisticated technology will ultimately provide the global medical community -- and patients throughout the world -- with leading-edge solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

MDS Proteomics employs over 200 people in its next-generation proteomics facilities in Europe and North America. The company focuses on antibody and small molecule therapeutics and presently has a number of candidate targets in pre-clinical discovery. Scientific breakthroughs announced by MDS Proteomics in 2002 include:

  • A groundbreaking study published in the January 10 issue of Nature demonstrating that MDS Proteomics' technology -- fully optimized for human applications -- not only duplicates the findings of traditional methods but also results in strikingly rich new information; and
  • A study published in the March 1 edition of Nature Biotechnology reporting that MDS Proteomics' researchers identified "on/off" switches for proteins that characterize a cell's response to drug treatment.

MDS Proteomics is a private company that is majority-owned by MDS Inc. For more information on MDS Proteomics, visit the company's Website at http://www.mdsp.com.
